Hey class! I would love to know your thoughts on this breaking story.
Six high school students in Great Neck, N.Y., are facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly paying $1,500 to $2,500 to Samuel Eshaghoff to take the SAT for them. Is the pressure to succeed too great?
Directions--> Read the following story and answer the following questions:
1. Should this be handled in the courts or in the school system in Great Neck? Why or why not?
2. Do you think the stakes are too high for college admissions? Why or why not?
3. Maturely, comment on another student's response. Do you agree with them, why or why not, did they make you think of something you hadn't previously though of, etc....
1. This should be handled in the court system. Because the SAT requires a monetary payment to take the test, paying someone else to do it for you is fraud. The school cannot exercise any actions against the students because fraud is a crime, not a school violation. Mr. Eshaghoff should be prosectued in a Federal Court as this crime of using another identity should be treated as identity theft.
ReplyDelete2. I do not think that the stakes are too high for college admissions. Clearly the students that payed for their scores probabbly did not take the SAT yet. They most likely did poorly on the PSAT and did not even try the real test. Hello people!!! The SAT and the PSAT are graded differently!!! Also the SAT includes a writing section which can greatly increase your score. If the students that did so had taken the SAT multiple times and were not proficient, it still wouldn't justify their actions. Now others did not get into college because those six students took their place because of their wrongfully superior SAT scores.
3. I will comment on someone elses comment tomorrow when more people have commented.
1. i think that the court should handle this type of situation cause this test decides mainly if a student gets into a college or not and determines their academic future.this is a serious crime cause its all about fairness to the other student that are sitting down taking these test while these students that cheated are not.
ReplyDelete2. i think the college admissions are way to high even though colleges competes against each other i still believe that they need to get there heads out the clouds and stop dreaming about these high scores and GPA cause not everyone meets the requirements it should be an average score and a average GPA and that paying a high price to take a test is unnecessary especially when they haven't even taken it.
3. an i agree with Chris about how the court needs to handle the situation cause the schools wont really do anything about it. and if you did poorly on the test you shouldn't have to pay for it at all.

1. I think that this should be handled by the court because this is a test that decides if you get into college or not.I feel that if you will cheat on a test this big colleges should know.
ReplyDelete2. In a way they are two high but on the other hand it forces you to work for what you want because when you get into college and the real world there are going to be things that are way harder to deal with then trying to get into college.
3. i agree with Chris, the courts should handle this type of case.
1)In my opinion, this should be handled in court. Not only the case she be disputed, but also the whole issue on standardized tests. “We’re raising the next generation of corporate villains and pirates if we don’t reinforce with vigor and consistency the absolute essentiality of integrity” (Khadaroo 1). The quote represents my point of view on this issue. Students will only continue to find ways to cheat on these tests. Therefore more precautions should be present to prevent cheating. I say, get rid of the tests all together. About 865 colleges no loner require test scores on the SAT and ACT (Khadaroo 2). This means that there are ways to complete college application without those test scores.
ReplyDelete2)To me, the stakes are high based on the individual person. Some students, like the students mentioned in the article are pressured by their society as well as parents. This pressure should not be a part of the college life. Especially while the scores are not mandatory. To me it seems useless. There would be no stakes if there was no pressure. And there would be no pressure if there were no tests.
3)I agree with Ju-Ju's response to number two. Colleges should actually stop competing for a moment and think about the students. Not everything has to be a competition. Sometimes we just need to think about what is most important. And sometimes that something may be each other. :) <3 (:
1. I think that this should be handled in court because what they did is not legal and not fair to others that actualy work for what they want.
ReplyDelete2. No I don't think the stakes are to high simply because we've been awre of what its goin to take to get into college for a while now . We should have been preparing and doing what it takes to get there so there would be no excuses for not making it.
3. I agree with cece the real life is going to tougher then trying to get into college
